Week notes #57
A really exciting event coming up this week with WikiHouse manufacturers Digital Woodoo - 25 May at 9am BST - get you free tickets here.
Digital Woodoo CIC is a WikiHouse microfactory on a mission to help more people, community groups and businesses in the north of the UK build with WikiHouse. They are based in Cumbria.
We have also just added a couple of new videos to our playlist dedicated to structural engineers - you can check it out on our Youtube channel.
How to calculate a WikiHouse wall for lateral forces:
How to calculate WikiHouse beams:
Gabriele, WikiHouse Engineering Lead, was at the University of Edinburgh this week testing finger joints (these joints are present in almost all WikiHouse blocks). The capacity was around 22 kN, which means being able to support more than 2 tons equivalent weight. Results will be available soon in our research page at https://www.wikihouse.cc/research.
If you are a structural engineer and want to know more about WikiHouse please drop us a line.
And finally, we wanted to let you know about another project run by Open Systems Lab that we have been quietly getting excited about: the Atlas of Ownership.
The Atlas is an open digital library to collect and categorise case studies of land ownership around the world and across history. Some are relatively well-known innovations, others are so deeply embedded into our society that we don’t question them. We wrote a Medium piece explaining why we created it: https://medium.com/open-systems-lab/to-redesign-ownership-we-need-a-map-e9c1f6c41546
How can you contribute?
1. Share it: https://lnkd.in/enTtjKdw
2. Submit an entry (at the link above)
3. Become a co-curator
4. Fund it: For the Atlas to continue, further funding will be needed - talk to us if you're interested.
